1954: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. attempts to use nonviolent methods in the growing civil rights movement, but is continually discredited as a coward and unable to back up his beliefs with facts and examples. Civil Rights Movement in USA turns violent.
1955: Germany lands first probes on the Moon. Hitler suffers a heart attack, survives but is forced to leave politics. Hitler names politician Lukas Koch as his successor.

1963: Empire of Japan launches a satellite that crashes in the Pacific Ocean four months after launch due to poorly planned orbital deployment. Dr. King leads a peaceful march on Washington D.C.
1964: NASA successfully sends an American into space and brings him back alive. USSR accomplishes five unmanned mission to the Moon in preparation for manned mission. Group of history major students in Berlin begin a medieval recreation group that is dubbed the Feudal Society.
1969: NASA lands a manned shuttle on the Moon.
1972: Kuppel is completed, atmosphere is transported from Earth, water, hydroponics, and colonists soon follow; Germany is still legally in control of Kuppel, though a self-sustaining localized government is put into place.
1973: Empire of Japan successfully sends a manned shuttle into space, shocking the world at moving directly to manned missions after failing to even get a satellite into a stable orbit. Germany begins plans for missions to Mars, launching from Kuppel. Dr. King is assassinated, USA fears reactions identical to Gandhi's assassination. USSR sends manned shuttle aimed for the Moon into space, atmospheric exit trajectory poorly planned, shuttle explodes before leaving the stratosphere.
1974: USA feels relief when Dr. King's movement continues nonviolently after his death, USA government passes bills aimed at equality into law. Unmanned drone begins flight to Mars from Kuppel.
1975: USSR successfully lands a man on the Moon, begins plans for own colony on the Moon. Unmanned drone reaches Mars orbit.

History: 1933-1950
1933: The night that Adolf Hitler was announced Chancellor of Germany, the ecstatic politician practically skipped out of the hotel that he had been in when the news was announced. As he worked his way through the crowd that had formed at the hotel steps, he overheard through the din a young boy ask his mother a question: "Mommy, do you think we'll ever go to the moon?" That question stuck in Hitler's mind, and by the end of the week had consumed him. He sent out an order to gather the brightest minds in physics, aerodynamics, astronomy, and rocketry. In a month when those minds had been found and brought to Berlin, he explained the question that had become his new goal in life and asked them, "...can you make it happen?"
1934: Hitler becomes dictator of Germany and names himself Fuhrer of the Third Reich. Europe becomes worried.
1935: The newly revitalized army of Germany annexes Austria and the Sudetenland before closing their borders. The world holds their breath as they wait for more from Germany, yet nothing happens. Visitors into German controlled lands report a fascination with space and space travel.
1942: Japan launches begins a campaign of conquest on China and swiftly takes the Chinese coastlines before moving along the northern border utilizing theoretical blitzkrieg tactics from their former ally of Germany. USSR moves troops to their border with China to ensure that Japan doesn't attack. Minor skirmishes occur between Japan and USSR as Japan moves along the border between Russia and China. Skirmishes end as Japanese forces reach the western border of China and continue southward. By December, Japan controls China's borders from Hong Kong to the western edge of China's border with Korea.
1943: Japan completely encloses China's borders and begin pushing inward. Japan accepts China's surrender on 19 September. Having conquered China, Japan begins to march south into the countries that border China. By December Japan has conquered half of the nations between China and the Indian Ocean.
1944: Japan finishes its conquest of mainland Asia. Japanese planes begin bombing USA military forces in the Philippines as troop transports begin depositing soldiers on the beaches. President Franklin D. Roosevelt asks Congress to declare war on Japan. Congress does so.
1945: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is assassinated, sparking violent revolution in India against British rule. Britain denies involvement in Gandhi's assassination and starts investigation. War between Japan and US continues.
1945: British investigation into Gandhi's assassination ends without results, protestors see it as proof of British involvement. Britain forced to violently quell rebellion. German lands celebrate as the first artificial satellite, the Hellen Stern, launches and begins transmitting information back to Earth. Close friends and colleagues later claim it was the only time they saw Hitler cry. USA manages to retake Phillipines.

USA diplomats convince USSR to attack Japanese forces in northern China to divert Japan's attention. With Japan's attention now split, USA forces sweep through Asia.
1947: USA captures up to China's borders. Chinese diplomats call for a cease-fire between Japan, USA, and USSR. China agrees to remain under Japanese control so long as more war isn't brought to their lands. USA and USSR agree and USA begins aid efforts in lands devastated by both Japanese and American war efforts.

Nations of Space
This post is about the nations within the setting the game takes place in.
To begin with there are twelve interstellar nations that control human space: the Reich, the Matrix Coalition, Argona, Neo Babylon, Maya, the Feudal Society, FOSS, the UISSR, the IEJ, the ISS, Untrar, and Splice-Tech.
Argona controls the largest amount of worlds and star systems, all of which are devoted to agricultural production. Argona has no unifying government, no standing military, but almost every human nation purchases a large portion of their food from Argona. That combined with the fact that every single person that considers Argona their nation of origin regularly uses various firearms for both hunting and protection acts as a deterrent against attack. The closest thing to a government that exists is a trading company that organizes the distribution of exports from and imports to Argona.
The Matrix Coalition is the only nation that isn't a human nation, and its formation in 2172 halted a war that had been raging between the Reich and the UISSR. Every citizen of the Matrix Coalition is an Artificial Intelligence of some kind or another. The Matrix Coalition signed nonaggression agreements with every nation that had a standing military at its founding, and despite that every nation is keeping a wary eye on the Matrix Coalition. The governmental body of the Matrix Coalition is structured in the same fashion as a human military is, another fact that makes the human nations nervous.
The Reich is the oldest space faring nation, first establishing a colony in the year 2008 on Luna. Considered to have been born in 1933 in the then Terran nation of Germany when newly appointed Chancellor Adolf Hitler announced his plans to take his country into space. After a brief expansion period focused on uniting neighboring nations that shared a language, Germany's borders closed as Hitler devoted all of his country's brain and manpower into developing a way to leave Terra. Today, the Reich is the most technologically advanced nation in known space. Almost every technological advancement is developed by the Reich, and the ships of the Reich are the most sought after ones on the market.
Neo Babylon was founded in 2089 by a group that sought to bring back the civilization of ancient Babylon. Having since expanded to three star systems, Neo Babylon is considered a small fish in a big pond. Neo Babylon has a very small military, less than two percent of their population, and combined with their aversion to using technology developed by other groups renders them near the bottom in regards to galactic power.
Maya is the smallest nation, following in the footsteps of Neo Babylon. It controls only one star system, has no Orbital Space Stations, and has only three worlds. The government of Maya is a theocratic monarchy based on the religion of ancient Mesoamerica, adapted and updated to interstellar life. Though no evidence exists, many suspect that Maya are behind the vast majority of slaver and raider attacks.
The Feudal Society originated as a Medieval European recreationist group that was founded in Berlin in 1964. By the year 2000, the Society had several thousand members scattered in almost every nation on Terra. When the Soviets developed the Ion Engine in 2004 and the Japanese made building one cheap and affordable in 2007, the Feudal Society (which had members in almost every field imaginable) agreed to found their own nation. In 2008 they gathered and in a fleet of 50 ships made their way to Europa. When the Sol system was made neutral territory, the Feudal Society left Europa and began expanding into space and establishing their own territory.
FOSS, Federation of Orbital Space Stations, is one of the larger nations, and is the only nation lacking a capital world. FOSS controls only two worlds, but more than seventy OSS. Most stations that FOSS have are mining stations in orbit around resource rich worlds. FOSS's military is unique in that their primary military technology is large mobile suits that are piloted. Commonly called 'mecha', these suits may be humanoid in shape or not, though the humanoid ones are often used for more than fighting.
The UISSR, Union of Interstellar Soviet Socialist Republics, is widely considered to be one of the two most powerful nations, alongside the Reich. When Germany placed a man on Luna in 1958 and finally announced to the world their space program, the USSR at the time decided that they would accomplish the same feat within thirty years. Beating that goal by a decade, they quickly established themselves as the Germany's primary rival for space advancement. Today, the UISSR is one of the three wealthiest nations in known space.
The IEJ, Interstellar Empire of Japan, first left Terra in 2009 and established their first extraterrestrial colony on Mars in 2013. Immensely xenophobic and territorial, the IEJ has the fewest allies and the most political enemies. Though the schematics for the melee weapon technology that they developed were kept under lock and key, in 2174 the schematics were stolen and they were close to declaring war on Splice-Tech, the ones they suspected had stolen the schematics, until four other nations stepped in.
The ISS, Interstellar Sovereign States, is descended from the United States and the tattered remnants of the League of Nations. Shortly after expanding to other systems, there was a revolt in their territory and the ISS became embroiled in a civil war that lasted for one hundred seven years before the revolutionaries won and established several states connected by a weak national government, much like the original United States just after the American Revolutionary War.
Splice-Tech is considered by most to be the least human of the nations outside of the Matrix Coalition. Splice-Tech is a technocracy that focuses on the accumulation of knowledge of any kind, though they specialize in cybernetics and genetic alterations. The Splice-Tech soldiers are either genetically altered to the point that they are no longer genetically human or are cybernetically enhanced until they have more machine than organic tissue. For this reason, on a soldier-to-soldier basis, Splice-Tech possesses the strongest military.
The last nation, Untrar, was founded in 2144 in territory that had belonged to a dozen squabbling warlords. Over a five year period, every one of the warlords was assassinated and a new government was put into place. Before any ambassadors or delegates from the other nations could arrive, the borders to Untrar were closed and no information as passed through their borders either way.

The Mars Accord
Mars
Accord
In continuing
spirit of the Geneva Conventions of the twentieth century, these agreed upon
accords shall form the basis of interstellar law. The following terms shall be
immutable, and not to be changed in any future accord unless the survival of
the human race depends upon it.
1. The system of Sol shall forever
remain neutral territory, belonging to no one nation but to humanity as a
whole.
2. Earth, herein returned to the
name of Terra, shall never produce or initiate thermonuclear devices or be
subject to any war.
3. In order to facilitate trade and
diplomacy, a common, interstellar language will be designated for said use. As
it is no longer any group’s primary language yet still known and understood,
Latin shall be used and the language updated to enable use in regards to modern
purposes and equipment.
4. Weapons that release nuclear
radiation pre or post use shall never be used on a Terra-sphere 1 or higher
world.
The
following define new aspects of extrasolar travel and colonization that require
addressing:
1. Worlds shall be defined in
regarding habitability by their Terra-sphere. Terra-spheres range from zero to
five. A Terra-sphere zero world has gravity, atmosphere, and additional aspects
(unstable plate tectonics, acid rain, temperature, etc.) far outside the human
compatibility range. Terra-sphere five worlds have ideal atmosphere, gravity,
meteorology, temperature, and tectonics.
2. Though in regards to clone rights
individual nations are still free to designate, the children of clones shall be
classified as half-clones. The grandchildren of clones shall be classified as
semi-clones. The great grandchildren of clones shall be classified as demi-clones. If a semi-clone has a child, the child is to be considered a
non-cloned human. Those with clones in their family tree are classified by the
most recent full clone in their line.
3. Artificial Intelligence shall be
classified in one of four ways:
a.
Digital;
any artificial intelligence that is singularly self-aware and lacks a physical
form of its own shall be known as a digital AI.
b.
Android;
any artificial intelligence that is singularly self-aware and possesses a
physical form of its own shall be known as an android AI.
c.
Nanoid;
any artificial intelligence that is composed of multiple nanites that function
with a hive mind shall be known as a nanoid AI.
d.
Swarm
Program; artificial intelligence that becomes more intelligent as similar
artificial intelligence enter proximity shall be known as swarm program AI.

Opening Post
Star-Flung Reich is a blog that I will be using to flesh out a game setting that I have been working on for the last month and a half. The game is an alternate-history/sci-fi setting where the day in 1933 that Hitler was announced Chancellor of Germany, he overheard a young boy asking his mother "Do you think we'll ever go to the moon?" That innocent, childhood question ended up changing the face of history as Hitler became dead-set on getting Germany into space. My next post will be on a document written in the year 2099 in the same spirit as the Geneva Conventions called the Mars Accords.
